Jeremiah Chiu, synthesist and member of Los Angeles experimental jazz quintet SML, has announced his new solo album, Edge Conditions. The record will arrive through International Anthem on October 9, with its streaming release following on October 27.
The announcement comes alongside the release of ‘Plastic Mind / Elastic Machines,’ a six-minute electronic track featuring field recordings and vocals from Japanese musician Takako Minekawa and drums from Chiu’s SML bandmate Booker Stardrum. The accompanying animated video was created by Korey Martin, who also designed the album artwork.
According to Chiu, the track became the creative starting point for the album. Initially imagining a more ensemble-focused and less percussion-heavy project, the producer said rediscovering the track encouraged him to follow a more rhythmic direction. The resulting record draws from electronic, experimental and improvisational traditions, with collaborators including Marta Sofia Honer, Ben Lumsdaine, Marquis Hill, Resavoir’s Will Miller and Patrick Shiroishi.
Edge Conditions follows Chiu’s 2023 solo album In Electric Time and arrives after a prolific period with SML, whose improvisational work has become a fixture of Los Angeles’ experimental music scene. The new album contains 11 tracks, including ‘A.M. Fuses,’ ‘Interfaces,’ ‘Doubles,’ ‘A Floral Pattern’ and ‘Night Fog.’
Chiu has also announced a run of U.S. shows surrounding the album, with performances scheduled at Plantasia in Chicago on September 10, Public Records in Brooklyn on October 29 and Zebulon in Los Angeles on November 29.
