Sony Music is intensifying its lawsuit against Udio, alleging that the AI music platform improperly used over 30,000 recordings. Recently, Sony filed to amend its complaint, prompting Udio to strongly oppose the request. After years of legal proceedings, Udio only responded to the current version of the lawsuit in April, reinforcing its fair use arguments.
This escalation highlights ongoing disagreements among the ‘Big Three’ labels regarding generative AI. While Udio settled with Universal Music and Warner Music, Sony is proceeding with its litigation.
The amended complaint includes dropping former plaintiffs and adding several Sony Music subsidiaries, but most notably, it introduces a substantial list of allegedly infringed works. Sony claims to have identified hundreds of thousands of infringing audio files using a systematic process involving Audible Magic.
Udio’s legal team contends that Sony’s late efforts to amend the complaint disrupt the scheduled timeline. As the situation unfolds, the outcome of the fair use argument will be closely watched, especially as Udio prepares to launch an app for authorised soundalike covers.
