A coalition of over 30 state attorneys general has formally demanded that Live Nation sell Ticketmaster. This follows a trial that found the merger between the two companies established a monopoly in the live music industry.
The states argue that splitting the companies is essential to restore competition in the live event ticket business. They are seeking a court order for Live Nation to divest Ticketmaster, allowing a standalone entity to compete for primary ticketing contracts with major concert venues.
Additionally, the coalition is pursuing damages for ticketing fee overcharges and advocating for the divestiture of several amphitheaters.
While the states are pushing for these changes, Live Nation is expected to argue that the matter should be resolved through adjustments to its business practices, such as limiting exclusive contracts.
Despite a recent agreement with the Department of Justice, the states consider it inadequate. The trial highlighted how Live Nation and Ticketmaster unlawfully dominated the market by tying venue use to promotion services.
