Moby Reimagines ‘When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die’ After Stranger Things Resurgence

Moby has shared a newly reworked version of his 1995 track ‘When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die’, breathing fresh life into the elegiac composition following its renewed prominence in Netflix series Stranger Things.

Originally released on Moby’s 1995 album Everything Is Wrong, the song found a new generation of listeners after featuring prominently in the fourth season of Stranger Things in 2022, before returning once again during the show’s final season. Now, nearly three decades on, the track has been revisited with additional vocals from Jacob Lusk of Gabriels, whose presence lends a new emotional gravity to the piece.

The rework appears as the lead track from Moby’s forthcoming 23rd studio album, Future Quiet, set for release on 20 February via BMG.

Speaking about the collaboration, Moby described first hearing Jacob Lusk’s voice on KCRW, recalling an immediate and lasting impression. After tracking the singer down and inviting him to collaborate, the result, according to Moby, was nothing short of transcendent. “The results speak for themselves,” he said, praising Lusk’s vocal contribution as elevating the song to new emotional heights.

The wider album reflects a deliberate turn inward. Describing Future Quiet, Moby characterised the record as a retreat from an increasingly overwhelming world. While professing a love for excess and volume, he explained that the album was born from a desire for stillness and sanctuary, both as a listener and a creator. “As the world gets louder and crazier,” he noted, “I find myself needing the refuge of quiet.”

That sense of refuge, Moby explained, sits at the heart of the album. Writing and recording Future Quiet offered a form of solace, one he hopes listeners will also find when engaging with the record.

The renewed success of ‘When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die’ echoes a broader Stranger Things effect, which previously propelled Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill’ back into global charts, underscoring the show’s enduring power to resurrect and recontextualise iconic songs.

Moby is also set to perform a live show on Brighton Beach this July.
