Sometimes the most meaningful ideas are born from rejection.
For Colombian DJ and producer Gustavo Martinez, better known as T.A.M. (The Acid Mind), one declined demo became the catalyst for something much bigger. After a label passed on one of his tracks, he decided to stop waiting for approval and create a platform where his own artistic vision, and that of like-minded producers, could exist on its own terms.
Founded in Colombia in 2021, The Acid Mind Recordings (T.A.M.R.) has grown into an independent home for hypnotic, groove-driven, and hard-hitting techno. Built around a philosophy of artistic freedom and musical identity, the label has become known for championing producers whose music prioritises emotion, energy, and authenticity over image or trends.
From weekly releases to an expanding international roster, T.A.M.R. continues to evolve while remaining committed to the underground spirit that inspired its creation.
We caught up with founder T.A.M. to discuss the story behind The Acid Mind Recordings, the philosophy that drives the label, its approach to artist development, and its vision for the future.
Please introduce your label and share the story behind how it started.
The Acid Mind Recordings, also known as T.A.M.R., was not born from a carefully planned idea. It started naturally from a personal need to release my own music.
Before and during the pandemic, I was deeply exploring psychedelia, virtual instruments, analogue gear, and different ways of shaping sound. During that process, I created a track and sent it to a friend who owned a record label. The answer was no.
That rejection pushed me to create my own platform, not only to release that track, but to build a space where my vision could exist without waiting for outside approval.
What inspired the name and identity of the label?
The name The Acid Mind has two meanings. On one side, it connects with the psychedelic world and the sounds that influenced an important period of my life.
On the other side, in Colombia, when we say someone is “ácido,” it describes a person with a sharp, unconventional way of thinking, someone whose mind doesn’t follow the normal path.
That is where The Acid Mind Recordings was born: from psychedelia, independence, and the need to express a different kind of mind through techno.
How would you describe the label’s sound? Which genres and subgenres does it primarily represent?
The Acid Mind Recordings primarily focuses on hypnotic techno, groove-driven techno, hard techno, and new rave.
We also release house music and other related electronic styles from time to time, but our priority is always music with groove, hypnosis, and a strong identity.
The label follows two main directions: groovy, hypnotic techno built around repetition, movement, and deep rhythm, alongside hard techno that feels powerful, direct, and real.
What do you look for when signing or working with artists?
Honestly, I try not to look at the artwork, the artist’s name, or even their social media when I receive a demo. I focus entirely on the music.
If the music connects with me, that is enough. I am always searching for something that recreates the feeling I experienced when I first discovered this sound, and sometimes I find that same energy in other producers.
For me, the most important thing is not the image surrounding an artist, but the honesty, identity, and emotion within the music itself.
Can you mention some of the artists currently on your roster?
Our roster includes T.A.M., Maccari, HUJUS, Childov, Marck D, Yuuta, Stretch, and Noise Not War.
How has the music industry, particularly with the rise of AI, changed since the label first launched?
We are not against artificial intelligence. In fact, we use AI for cover artwork, photo editing, visual adjustments, and other creative assets for our artists.
However, when it comes to music and composition, the situation is more delicate. Every day it becomes harder to identify which elements may have been assisted by AI, but it is still possible to recognise when an entire track feels generated by artificial intelligence.
We also use AI tools to help detect AI-generated music. At the moment, we are not open to releasing music created by AI, and I honestly believe we never will be.
Technology can support the creative process, but the music itself should always come from genuine human experience.
What challenges have you faced as an independent label, and how have you overcome them?
One of our biggest challenges has been gaining support from major platforms, including download stores, Spotify playlists, and other important spaces that help independent music reach a wider audience.
We have overcome many of these challenges by reinvesting the label’s royalties into promotion, marketing, and the long-term growth of the project.
In the beginning, visibility was difficult, but over time we have built a strong international community through consistency, reinvestment, and belief in the music.
We are always looking for opportunities to grow, and for that reason, I am truly grateful for this interview. It is the first one we have received as a label.
Are there any upcoming releases, collaborations, or projects that fans should look out for?
Around this time of year, we like to release music that feels strong for the summer.
One of our most important upcoming projects is an album called Perdón, where six reggaeton songs will be reinterpreted as techno. It is a controversial project, but we believe it has an essence, style, and energy that are worth experiencing.
As always, we will continue releasing new music every Friday, including EPs, singles, and collaborative projects.
What’s the long-term vision and goal for the label moving forward?
Our goal is not simply to climb rankings or chase recognition.
We want The Acid Mind Recordings to endure through the constant changes happening within the music industry while always protecting the identity that defines us.
We hope to become a historic label for Colombia, for Latin America, and for the wider electronic music community. In the future, we would also like to expand into a DJ agency and a collective capable of producing larger-scale events.
We are already organising events today, but we want to continue growing step by step, without ever losing the essence that made The Acid Mind Recordings what it is.
