Shackleton — ‘Euphoria Bound’

From the surreal opening pulse of ‘Elemental Dream’, Shackleton drags you into a world that bends and twists around sound itself. Bass rises like subterranean tides while jittery rhythms pirouette unpredictably, leaving you disoriented and exhilarated in equal measure. Shackleton emerged from London’s underground in the mid-2000s, quickly gaining recognition for his shadowy, rhythm-driven soundscapes. Known for blending dub, off-kilter dance tracks, immersive IDM, and global percussion, he has crafted a singular musical universe that spans clubs, festivals, and immersive home listening experiences. His earlier works, like Three EPs and Fabric 55, solidified him as a visionary of electronic music, and each new release continues to expand his sonic cosmos.

On Euphoria Bound, the UK producer’s debut for AD 93, every track is a portal. ‘The Unbeliever’s Pulse’ takes two-step and flings it into a misty ether, while ‘When Memory Ceases’ hints at early Krautrock sensibilities through the lens of jazzy keys.  ‘Contagious Illusion’, perhaps the most antithetical track to the album’s alluring title, is an abrasively unnerving journey: dub techno chords shimmer, eerie piano drifts like fog, spooky choral motifs float through the fray, and ritualistic organic drums pulse with merciless intent. Every time you feel as if you are finding your bearings, Shackleton playfully pulls the carpet out from underneath your feet, shrouding your confusion in an immersive mysticism. Chaos and order collide, history and futurism intertwine, and yet every sound remains unmistakably Shackleton.

By the time the album closes, the listener is left in a daze as if they have just emerged from a mind-melting labyrinth. The rugged Lancashire landscapes of Shackleton’s youth are imprinted in every groove, shaping a record that is disorienting, hypnotic, and breathtaking all at once.
