The renowned electronic duo Boards of Canada has publicly criticised the Trump administration for the unauthorised inclusion of their music in a promotional video. The song used, titled ‘Deep Time,’ is part of their highly anticipated 18-track album, Inferno, which was released on 29 May. Â
The video, which appeared on the social media platform X, features grainy, VHS-inspired visuals of the American flag alongside military imagery of boats and helicopters at the White House. Fans quickly voiced their disapproval in the comments, calling on the duo’s label, Warp Records, to address the perceived misuse of the artists’ intellectual property. Outraged listeners condemned the use of the track for political purposes, with one fan warning, “DO NOT disrespect Boards of Canada by using their music in your propaganda.”
Addressing the controversy, Boards of Canada and Warp Records issued a collaborative statement saying, “Warp Records and Boards of Canada do not condone the unauthorised use of their music for political messaging.”
Inferno marks the duo’s first full-length project in more than 13 years, following 2013’s Tomorrow’s Harvest. The release was preceded by a series of cryptic promotional efforts starting in April, including posters appearing globally and the distribution of VHS tapes featuring a hexagonal logo. Last month, the group also held exclusive listening events for the new material in London, Tokyo, and Los Angeles.
