Björk has officially launched her new exhibition, ‘Echolalia,’ at The National Gallery of Iceland (Listasafn Íslands) in Reykjavík. The exhibition opened to the public on Saturday, May 30, and features three large-scale audiovisual installations, offering fans an intimate look into the artist’s creative process by combining both new and existing works.
A deeply personal aspect anchors the exhibition, as two of the installations showcase written works dedicated to the memory of Björk’s mother. Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir, a prominent homoeopath and environmental activist, passed away in 2018. The third installation provides a glimpse into Björk’s musical future, developed from material related to her forthcoming work and featuring a version of a new song. The exhibition also includes tracks from her 2022 album, Fossora, specifically ‘Ancestress’ and ‘Sorrowful Soil.’
The launch follows Björk’s clarification in April that ‘Echolalia’ strictly refers to the exhibition itself, despite fan speculation that it might be the title of a new album. However, she did confirm that a new album is indeed “in the works.” Complementing the exhibition will be an echolalia rave offshoot featuring Arca, Sideproject, and Ronja Jóhannsdóttir, set to take place in Iceland during the total eclipse this summer.
