AI-powered music remixing platform Hook has struck a major licensing partnership with Universal Music Group, allowing fans to create, remix and share content using officially licensed recordings from the world’s largest music company. The agreement marks another significant step in the music industry’s efforts to find commercial uses for AI while maintaining control over copyrighted material.
Hook allows users to transform and combine songs using AI-powered creative tools, including remix effects, mashups and other audio edits. The platform is built around short-form, social-first music creation, with users able to share their creations across social media and within Hook’s own communities. Under the new agreement, UMG’s recordings will be made available within this licensed framework, giving fans new ways to interact with music while creating potential revenue streams for artists and rights holders.
According to UMG and Hook, the partnership was developed over a two-year collaboration involving more than 30 artist campaigns. The companies say the deal is designed to give artists and rights holders greater control over how their music is used, with permissions that can be managed at the level of individual songs and specific features. Hook has positioned itself as an alternative to the unlicensed remix culture that has flourished across social media, offering rights holders a way to monetise fan-made music rather than simply removing it.
