Peckham venue TOLA has launched a £50,000 fundraising campaign after a break-in left the independent London club with more than £30,000 worth of stolen equipment and stock.
During an August 27 burglary, thieves caused significant damage to TOLA and stole DJ gear, parts of the sound system, till systems, card readers, and thousands of pounds in alcohol. Despite operating with just two card readers and relying on cash, the venue stayed open for its scheduled Notting Hill Carnival bank holiday events to avoid disappointing promoters, artists, and customers.
The campaign, titled “The Dance Must Go On – Help TOLA Survive,” aims to raise £50,000 to replace stolen equipment and till systems, rent temporary gear, repair damage, and upgrade security. Co-founder Tom Broadbent revealed insurance will not cover the losses, forcing TOLA to absorb the impact. He told DJ Mag the situation is especially challenging for a small business already navigating recent nightlife industry pressures.
TOLA’s campaign underlines the broader economic strain on independent nightlife, where post-COVID inflation and rising living costs compress venue earnings. Since opening on Peckham High Street in 2017, the late-night venue has consistently reinvested in its spaces and sound setup. Serving as a key pillar of South London’s grassroots scene, TOLA hosts club nights, promoters, DJ contests, electronic music, and Carnival events.
The music community has rallied behind the campaign, with over £11,000 raised as of the time of writing.
