Scottish sound engineer and producer Mickey Mann, best known for his work with artists including Aphex Twin, Orbital, Basement Jaxx and Moby, has died at the age of 64.
Born in Aberdeen in 1960, Mann first entered the electronic music scene after joining pioneering UK act The Shamen on tour in 1985. He later became the group’s manager, helping launch the careers of other influential acts by booking Orbital as one of The Shamen’s early support artists.
Over a career spanning four decades, Mann established himself as one of electronic music’s most respected live sound engineers. His credits include work with Aphex Twin, Basement Jaxx, Moby, System 7, Meat Beat Manifesto, Ultramarine, Curve and Rachid Taha. Outside the mixing desk, he was also the frontman of the dark electronic project Pressure of Speech, which he formed in 1993.
Tributes have poured in from across the electronic music community, with fellow artists and collaborators remembering Mann as a key figure behind countless live performances and recordings. Musician Robin Rimbaud (Scanner) described him as someone who “connected the dots” between many of electronic music’s most influential acts.
A fundraiser has since been launched by Mann’s family to help cover funeral expenses and travel costs for relatives wishing to attend his service in London, where he had been based in recent years.
