The music world is mourning the passing of Martin Ejlertsen, frontman and songwriter of Danish indie rock band Virak, who passed away on May 23, 2026, at age 49 after a battle with ALS. His final project, the re-release of Virak’s debut album Threads, will be unveiled digitally on May 29, 2026, with a vinyl release to follow. Originally a CD exclusive in 2008, this reissue reflects Ejlertsen’s awareness that it would be his last recorded work.
Ejlertsen described his illness as “a long waking nightmare,” but he found light in completing this album during a dark time. As the founder of Black Light White Light, his impactful songwriting garnered attention worldwide, particularly with their album The Admirer, which featured the heartfelt track ‘Epilepsy’ written for his daughter.
Virak, active from 2002 to 2009, showcased Ejlertsen’s early artistic vision, drawing inspiration from bands like Mogwai and Spiritualized. The lead single, ‘Where It All Begins,’ highlights his poignant vocal delivery. Alongside Threads, the earlier EP But Not As We Know It (2004) will also be available digitally, preserving his musical legacy.
Despite the circumstances, the re-release of Threads stands as a testament to Ejlertsen’s enduring spirit, allowing his music to live on for his loved ones and fans. As the music community honours his legacy, his contributions will continue to resonate with many.
