Spotify is positioning itself for an AI-driven future, with co-CEO Gustav Söderström revealing plans to transform the streaming platform into an ecosystem where artificial intelligence agents play a central role in music discovery and consumption.

During Spotify’s Q3 2026 earnings call, Söderström detailed a vision where users rely on AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Meta’s Muse to manage their listening. Instead of searching manually, listeners can use AI agents to analyse history, match tracks, and create custom mixes.

“We are now an agent,” Söderström said, describing Spotify’s position in the emerging agentic AI era. Spotify believes its vast music catalogue and listening data position it well as AI assistants integrate into daily life. This strategy shifts user interaction from traditional browsing to automated recommendations and personalised listening, giving AI agents a larger role in artist discovery and music organisation.

The announcement sparked concerns from musicians’ groups and independent advocates regarding the impact of AI streaming on human artists. The Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW) criticised the industry’s trajectory, advocating for the Living Wage for Musicians Act and its direct royalty model to support human creators over AI-generated music. Amid growing debates over AI content, royalties, and automated music discovery, Spotify’s shift toward an agent-based model leaves questions about how independent musicians will sustain visibility and fair pay as algorithms gain greater control.
