Karmacoda’s ‘Time’ gets the Black Motion afro house treatment

The Black Motion remix of Karmacoda’s ‘Time’ dropped via Sola Musa Music and has already started making rounds. The South African duo, active since 2010 with Thabo Mabogwane and Kabelo “Problem Child Ten83” Koma currently at the helm, are known for their precise percussion choices and textured Afro House constructions. They have secured spots on Defected Records, taken home South African Music Awards for Best Duo/Group and Best Dance Album, achieved Gold and Platinum status on several projects, and performed a widely discussed NPR Tiny Desk set. Support for this release showed up on RTÉ 2FM’s Alternative with Dan Hegarty and in Music In Africa plus SIX AM, building on the attention Prince Kaybee’s prior version received from YourEDM, Vicious Magazine, SLIKOUR ONLIFE, and Music In Africa.

Karmacoda have spent two decades crossing electronica, trip-hop, R&B, ballads, and dream pop, frequently blending soul-driven R&B with jazz lounge sensibilities. The original ‘Time’ appears on their 2022 release Lessons In Time and features Jessica Ford on vocals, Brett Crockett contributing both vocals and production, and Eric Matsuno covering bass and multi-instrument duties. Processed vocals float over piano progressions, a steady shaker rhythm, and a striking melody to explore themes of regret and inward-looking thought. Black Motion remixed the song as a focused Afro House track built around a consistent, forward-leaning beat. The hypnotic arpeggio line moves across the stacked rhythms and ambient layers, allowing the vocal performance to retain its weight from the original while the percussion adds fresh drive. Listeners drawn to Caiiro, Culoe De Song, Sun El Musician, or Black Coffee will find the balance familiar—introspective core wrapped in rhythmic momentum.

Black Motion shared: “The ‘Time’ remix was born from a conversation with the ancestors, a reminder that time is not just counted, it is felt in the drum and carried in the spirit. We approached it as a ritual in sound, where rhythm becomes memory and melody becomes prayer. It is our offering to the eternal pulse that guides us beyond the clock.
