Giora on the creative process, their new single ‘POWER CANDY,’ and more

London-born and based artist Giora has unveiled their new single titled ‘POWER CANDY’, released on 17 April via their label Holypop. The track is the third single from their forthcoming EP FREEWAY, which is slated for release on 1 May 2026.

‘POWER CANDY’ was written by Giora and produced in collaboration with Czech producer Oliver Torr and mastered by Canadian composer Zac Tiessen.

The song explores the complex and often challenging nature of power dynamics. Lyrically, it serves as a gothic love song that reveals a more vulnerable side of Giora’s artistry, with sharp lyrics and cascading synth-filled instrumentals.

Paint us a picture: what sparked your passion for the arts in the first place? Was there a single moment or experience that solidified your decision to pursue this path?

I had been working in a job for a few years and was always writing and making music on the side, and during the pandemic I was home a lot with more time for music and I started putting stuff out and making videos.

I realised it was my time to pursue it fully upon moving to Athens in late 2021, I immediately felt very welcome by the friends I made, I got to finish my album and I started playing locally at Hollywood Pub, which is a very important space for music and has since sadly closed.

When you create, what leads the way – a feeling, a story, or the sound itself?

Creation is not a linear experience, so it could be any of those, and even sometimes I wake from a dream with a new song. I’m first and foremost a songwriter and storyteller, so whilst there’s always a feeling I’m writing from and words or thoughts that I’ve got brewing, sometimes I have a specific idea I want to explore and sometimes it could be a sound I create or a chord progression I’m playing with that opens the gate to where the song is going to go.

What’s in your toolkit? Share the gear, gadgets, or software you can’t create without.

A piano is great or a keyboard, a guitar, a mic, and my laptop. I use Logic and a bunch of plugins to produce, and always travel with a mic and a little MIDI keyboard so that I can create wherever I am. Ideally, I’m in a studio with everything available to me.

What’s your go-to ritual or trick for getting into the creative zone?

I like being in my own space and a bit isolated, could be at home, but I love being at a residency where I can be neutral. It’s not the most social approach, but it helps me hear everything clearly.

What’s the one item you always keep within arm’s reach while creating or performing?

A pen for writing. A mic for performing.

How did you ultimately end up defining your sound?

It’s my kind of pop. I don’t define it because that would limit it. I’ve been told it’s pretty unique and futuristic. It’s a combination of what I do, the writing and composing, the producing and arranging, maybe the melodies, and the kinds of sounds that excite me.

How has your creative process or perspective shifted since you started your journey?

It’s become more direct.

Walk us through a recording session: what’s the most memorable moment you’ve had in the studio?

I’d say producing this EP with Oliver Torr was a really euphoric moment. We had previously worked together and wrote my single Heart Shape Key when him and his partner visited London a few years ago, and knowing how fun and exciting the combination of our sound was, when I was ready to finish the songs for this EP, I brought him my demos and we spent a couple of weeks together and he really brought out more of me in the studio, pushing these songs even further.

Are there any unexpected or dream collaborations hidden in your work?

The universe.

Any side projects you’re working on?

I’ve recently worked with a friend to arrange some piano for their songs and mix their music.

Who’s an emerging artist you think deserves more recognition right now?

Other than me?

What’s the strangest or most surprising song currently on your playlist?

Right now it’s Touch it by Ariana Grande and a track by Metrika, a singer from Spain, El Taser de Mama. I’m working out a lot lately, and they give me life.

Which song, album, or playlist do you never get sick of, no matter how many times you listen to it?

D’eux by Celine Dion

Are there any unexpected hobbies or projects you’re exploring outside of your main work?

I dance and do body weight exercises, handstands. Making this EP was such a physical experience and brutal at times when sitting down for hours, and honestly, getting out to move was my self-care routine. Maybe I should do a project with a gym cos I really kick off when I’m there.

If your life and career were an album, what would its title be, and what’s the hidden track only your fans would know?

Would be cool to have many more albums ahead of me; I don’t want to write the tombstone.

Give us a glimpse into the future – what surprises or milestones are coming up for you this year?

It’s no surprise if I tell you.

Famous last words?

Truth Freedom Love.
