The multi-hyphenate Techno titan Ellen Allien has unveiled a deeply personal new single, ‘Under The Ocean’, released via her BPitch label on July 18th following its debut at NAME Festival earlier this year. A pioneering figure in electronic music, Ellen’s formidable career spans ten albums and countless singles, EPs, and remixes for iconic labels such as Warp and Mute. Her collaborations include work with Ash Code, as well as remixes for Lebanon Hanover and Rosa Anschütz, showcasing her influence across the vast realms of Darkwave and Techno. As head of BPitch and UFO Inc., Ellen continues to champion emerging talent while steering her labels to international acclaim, with signings like Rosa Anschütz and Dollkraut. Her boundary-pushing work extends beyond music through projects like AFTER DARK, her multimedia collaboration with Stini Roehrs, which premiered at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.
A Berlin native, Ellen Allien has remained at the forefront of underground electronic music through her evolving sound and restless creativity. Her music fuses emotional resonance with dancefloor intensity, bridging Techno’s past and future with her own distinct DNA. From launching her Balcony Streaming sessions during the pandemic to curating the expansive We Are Not Alone compilations, Ellen has continually shaped the culture around her. Her work embodies the spirit of Berlin’s subculture, influencing not only music but art, design, and fashion. A tireless global DJ, she continues to helm her We Are Not Alone raves at RSO and beyond, while projects like Vinylism reflect her dedication to vinyl culture and grassroots scenes worldwide.
’Under The Ocean’ stands as one of her most personal works, created as a tribute to her mother who passed away in early 2025. The track unfolds as Techno cast in dreamy reverence, tracing an imagined journey of Ellen Allien’s mother as she drifts through shimmering sonic realms. Fusing Ellen’s signature techno pulse with a profound emotional undercurrent, ‘Under The Ocean’ is a poignant, immortalised tribute that allows Ellen to carry her mother’s spirit into every set.
“I wanted to make a track that I can play in my DJ sets, because then my mother is also with me when I perform,” divulged Allien. “She was at my first DJ show, dancing in front of me, and always supported me. This is my way of creating a beautiful reminder of her and what she means to me.”
