Dutch electronic duo DOOXS release other-worldly, haunting new single “Dirt” today via OO Records ahead of their EP “Under My Tongue” out on 25th November. Despite their early days, DOOXS have already caught the attention of i-D magazine, won the Rotterdam music prize Grote Prijs van Rotterdam and played the prestigious Eurosonic Noorderslag (Aurora, Dua Lipa, Nao, Mura Masa) as well as Metropolis Festival (Vince Staples, Haelos).
DOOXS was formed in August 2015 by Rotterdam-based singer and songwriter Djoeke and producer Aniek. Djoeke’s was inspired to sing from a young age being surrounded by classical music and a father who was an established opera singer. Growing up in the north of Netherlands, Djoeke moved to Rotterdam at the age of nineteen to study pop music at the Codarts Conservatory. Aniek started playing the violin and piano as a child and moved to Rotterdam to study medicine. Self-taught on music production, Aniek was hooked right away deciding to switch from medicine to the conservatoire. Djoeke spotted Aniek playing in a band in at a Rotterdam club and was immediately impressed by her performance. They shared some music and with the creation of their first single, ’Nude’ in one afternoon they were both convinced there was something special within their collaboration. Since then Aniek and Djoeke have been playing together and growing a repertoire through their highly energetic live shows.
Aniek and Djoeke’s unique sound consists of bringing together their love for ambient, techno and IDM whilst fusing elements of R&B and indie-folk. Experimentation, rule-bending and merging of genres has made their sound altogether infinitely interesting. Djoeke’s airy, light vocals are mesmerizing, almost trance-inducing, seamlessly drifting on top of dark synths, icy electronics, minimal beats and deep basses leaves one breathless.
DOOXS explain of their inspiration behind the upcoming EP. “This EP was entirely created by ourselves and we are extremely proud of it. We started working with each other only in August 2015, so it has all happened pretty fast. The lyrics deal with topics as vulnerability and intimacy and are quite visually oriented. The production is a mixture of downtempo genres like hip-hop, dub and trap and relying heavily on the editing of Djoeke’s vocals and mashing them into synths and background textures. Our musical inspirations include Clams Casino, Andy Stott, Balam Acab, Nosaj Thing, 18+ and Fever Ray.”
