Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins has died at age 64. The producer and DJ was found unresponsive in his Mexico City hotel room before a show, and Greensmith Artists confirmed he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Atkins‘ death marks the loss of a key electronic music figure who shaped techno. Born in Detroit in 1962, he formed the Belleville Three with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, establishing the city as a global electronic music hub in the 1980s. Atkins first gained prominence with Richard Davis in Cybotron, producing seminal tracks like ‘Cosmic Cars’ and ‘Clear’. After splitting in 1985, he launched Model 500 (‘No UFO’s’, ‘The Chase’) and founded Metroplex, a crucial label for Detroit’s techno scene.

Atkins played a central role in shaping techno’s identity by combining futuristic electronic music with funk, science fiction, and social commentary. His reach extended across genres, notably when Missy Elliott sampled Cybotron’s ‘Clear’ for her 2005 hit ‘Lose Control’. Throughout his career, he explored various projects, including Infiniti, Borderland (with Moritz von Oswald), and a 2023 revival of Cybotron for new material and live shows, leaving a lasting legacy across generations of electronic musicians.

Following the news, fellow Belleville Three member Kevin Saunderson paid tribute to Atkins, calling him a “true visionary who opened the door for so many of us” and reflecting on his guidance. With no official cause of death announced yet, Atkins leaves a lasting legacy that established the foundation of Detroit techno and continues to influence global dance music.
