The 2025 BRIT Awards took place at London’s iconic O2 Arena on March 1st and 2nd, celebrating the finest achievements in music over the past year.
Established in 1977 and formalized as an annual event in 1982, the BRIT Awards have become the most prestigious music awards ceremony in the UK. The BRITs have shaped pop culture with unforgettable moments, from Freddie Mercury’s final public appearance to Geri Halliwell’s iconic Union Jack dress. While the ceremony has evolved from its unpredictable, rebellious roots into a more polished – some would say, sanitised – production, it remains a vital celebration of musical talent and artistry.
At the 2025 edition, Charli XCX dominated the ceremony. She claimed the coveted Song of the Year award for her 2024 hit ‘Guess’, featuring Billie Eilish. Accepting her trophy, she remarked, “I’m truly delighted that a song about underwear now holds a BRIT Award.”
She also secured the Dance Act award, taking the stage alongside A.G. Cook, Finn Keane, and George Daniel. “I feel like dance music and electronic genres are often dismissed as shallow, but they’re profoundly emotive,” she expressed. “This music allows me to feel and escape on such a deep level.”
She paid tribute to influential electronic artists such as Justice, Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Honey Dijon, and the late SOPHIE. Her winning streak continued with the Songwriter of the Year award. “Thank you to all the artists who feel like they don’t fit in but are brave enough to try — I share this with you,” she said.
The Group of the Year award went to Ezra Collective, who stepped on stage to accept the honor. Drummer Femi Koleoso gave an impassioned speech, crediting youth groups across the country for nurturing the band’s success. “EZ to the world,” he declared.
Stormzy took home the award for Hip Hop / Grime / Rap Act, expressing gratitude to Chase & Status for their contributions to his 2024 track ‘Backbone’. “I’m incredibly thankful to the BRITs and to the public,” he said. “This is an overwhelming moment for me, for so many reasons. Thank you, Lord.”
Following her monumental success at the 2024 ceremony, RAYE won the R&B Act award. “I’m still processing last year’s wins,” she admitted. “I can’t believe I have fans who continue to support me like this.”
The International Group of the Year award went to Fontaines D.C., who accepted the honor remotely from Australia. “It’s incredible to receive this award for a second time,” they shared.
The evening culminated in Charli XCX winning Album of the Year for her critically-acclaimed 2024 album BRAT. Stepping on stage for the fifth time, she reflected on her journey: “I used to tell myself that this kind of recognition wasn’t important,” she confessed. “I’ve always felt like an outsider in the music industry, so to be acknowledged for this album feels incredibly meaningful.”
