Spotify to Launch “AI Persona” Badges: Transparency Meets the Future of Streaming

Spotify is set to introduce a new “AI Persona” badge for artist profiles representing AI-generated identities, aiming to enhance transparency in the streaming platform. Starting mid-September 2026, this badge will help listeners differentiate between real artists and fictional AI personas.

The badge will denote artist identities that appear wholly artificial, while human artists using AI tools in their creative process won’t automatically receive this label. Initially, artists can voluntarily identify as AI Personas, and Spotify will review profiles that seem to meet the criteria, allowing flagged artists to appeal decisions.

AI Personas will be excluded from editorial and algorithmic recommendations but can still be discovered by users actively searching for them. This move is part of Spotify’s broader effort to provide context around music, building on previous initiatives like the “Verified by Spotify” badge, which ensures authentic artist representation.

As AI-generated music uploads surge, raising concerns about streaming fraud, Spotify’s approach aims to maintain legitimacy while making the origins of music more transparent. However, questions remain regarding the criteria for categorising an artist as an AI persona, particularly with fictional and stylised identities.
