Patreon Restructures and Cuts 20% of Workforce to Adapt to Changing Tech Landscape

Patreon has announced the largest round of layoffs in its history, cutting 20% of its global workforce as the creator membership platform restructures to adapt to a rapidly changing technology landscape.

The company confirmed that 93 employees will lose their jobs, with CEO and co-founder Jack Conte describing the decision as “painful” in a public letter shared with creators. Despite the significant cuts, Conte insisted that Patreon’s core business remains “healthy and strong,” framing the move as part of a broader effort to streamline the company’s operations rather than a response to declining financial performance.

Alongside the layoffs, Patreon will flatten its organisational structure, refocus teams around its highest priorities, and overhaul internal workflows in an effort to become more agile in an increasingly competitive creator economy.

“The market has changed dramatically,” Conte wrote, adding that the company needs to evolve its cost structure and decision-making processes to keep pace with the speed of technological change.

Conte also sought to address speculation surrounding artificial intelligence, making it clear that AI was not responsible for the workforce reduction.

“To be clear about the impact of AI on today’s decision: we are not making the above changes because we believe AI replaces humans,” he wrote, arguing that while AI is reshaping how technology companies operate, it cannot replace the creativity, craftsmanship, judgement and human connection that Patreon employees provide.

The announcement comes as creator platforms face mounting pressure from an increasingly crowded market. Patreon, which allows musicians, podcasters, writers and other creators to earn recurring revenue directly from fans, has expanded its suite of creator tools in recent years while facing growing competition from platforms including YouTube memberships, Substack and other direct-to-fan monetisation services.
