London’s experimental music and arts space IKLECTIK is set to leave Peckham Levels after just over a year, citing mounting financial pressures and the rejection of an appeal for business rates relief.
In a statement shared on August 25, the organisation said its application for rates relief had been unsuccessful despite support from cultural organisations, local councillors and the Music Venue Trust. IKLECTIK, which operates as a cultural not-for-profit, said the combination of business rates, rising operating costs and its reliance on income from live events had created an unsustainable level of financial risk.
The venue will continue hosting its programme at Peckham Levels until October 25, after which it will depart the Rye Lane complex. IKLECTIK said it is now working on “new shapes” for its future programming, suggesting that the organisation’s activities may continue in a different form.
The move marks another setback for the experimental arts organisation, which previously lost its long-running home in Waterloo before relocating to Peckham Levels. In its statement, the team thanked The Trampery, the Peckham Levels community, Music Venue Trust and the artists and audiences who have supported its work, describing IKLECTIK as an independent space for adventurous culture.
