During a 28°C London heatwave, eager fans filled The O2 arena for a landmark sold-out show by Nkosinathi Maphumulo, famously known as Black Coffee. The Grammy-winning DJ delivered a breathtaking three-hour performance featuring a live orchestra and surprise guests, representing a full-circle moment for the artist whose global trajectory began in London’s club scene. Despite the pressure of the massive venue, Maphumulo maintained his composure, reflecting on the distinct energy of the city and the complexities of staging a truly unique show.

While Black Coffee views London as the launchpad for his international success, his journey has been defined by resilience following a 1990 car accident that resulted in a serious injury and two fatalities. This life-altering tragedy did not dampen his resolve to become a world-class DJ, and he has since emerged as one of the most prominent musical exports from Africa.

Today, he is a vocal advocate for better artistic infrastructure in South Africa, emphasising the need for formal systems to mentor new talent. Furthermore, he challenges how African artists are viewed globally, advocating for recognition based on merit and excellence rather than being limited by the “African global player” label.

Central to his philosophy is the idea that African creators should stop seeking external validation from the West. “Whatever opportunities we’re not given, we need to create ourselves and stop waiting to be invited to the table,” he states.

This mindset was evident in his strategic approach to the Grammy Awards; he intentionally bypassed categories reserved for African music to compete in mainstream international fields alongside his global peers. For Maphumulo, winning was about more than the trophy; it was about proving that African artists belong at the main table, not a smaller one.
