A new collaborative EP from Big Freedia and the late SOPHIE will be released this summer, with the first single, ‘Blaze That Ass,’ arriving on 22 May.
SOPHIE was a pioneering producer who pioneered the hyperpop genre with her unique sound. Her debut single, ‘Nothing More to Say,’ made waves in 2013, quickly followed by the fan-favorite ‘Bipp’ and the 2018 album, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. She also received production credits on hit songs such as Madonna’s ‘Bitch I’m Madonna’ and Charli XCX’s ‘Out of My Head,’ among many others. Tragically, she passed away in 2021 following an accidental fall in Athens. In 2024, collaborators and family released a self-titled posthumous album.
Freedia, known for her collaborations with artists like Beyoncé, Drake, and Lizzo, has been credited with bringing New Orleans bounce music to a global audience. Her collaboration with SOPHIE began a decade ago in the late producer’s Los Angeles home studio.“Recording with SOPHIE is something I hold even closer to my heart now, especially after her passing,” Freedia said in a statement. “She was an artist who showed the world that living boldly is your greatest power! With this EP, I want to show the world how loved she was and still is.”
