London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been granted new licensing powers that will give City Hall greater influence over the capital’s nightlife, including the approval of applications for major venues, events and festivals. Announced on 3 November 2026, the changes aim to create a more consistent approach to licensing across London’s boroughs.
The announcement was made during Khan’s visit to Blue Note London, where he outlined the importance of supporting the city’s hospitality and nightlife industries. Under the new arrangements, the mayor can make decisions on local licensing and opening hours, particularly for developments considered strategically important to London’s cultural scene.
Boroughs must now consult the mayor on licensing policy revisions, and City Hall will receive all applications for enhanced oversight. Khan stated these powers help champion London’s venues and build a more strategic, consistent citywide licensing approach.
Building on Khan’s plans for a London-wide licensing system, the framework balances nightlife needs with public safety by preventing crime, protecting children, and maintaining safety while supporting cultural spaces. These expanded powers may significantly impact London’s nightlife sector, especially independent venues, promoters, and event organisers dealing with varied borough requirements.
