Album Review: Adult DVD – ‘Adult DVD’

Leeds dance-punk six-piece Adult DVD blend acid-house, post-punk guitars, and irreverent British humour on their 12-track self-titled debut, released 25 September 2026 via Fat Possum Records. Channelling ’90s rave energy and indie rock attitude, the album sits between Happy Mondays and LCD Soundsystem.

Opening track ‘Do As I Please’ highlights the band’s focus on movement, combining choppy rhythms and synth hooks with Harry Hanson’s deadpan delivery. ‘Coffin Dodger’ maintains this drive through an electroclash pulse and absurdist lyrics, while ‘Jesus Christ Supercar’ uses post-punk influences to pair sharp instrumentation with British humour.

The album’s humour shines when its eccentric characters mirror everyday life. ‘Cowboy On Aisle Three’ turns a supermarket meltdown into a melancholic singalong, ‘World’s Best Boss’ targets corporate hierarchies with looping rhythms, and ‘Real Tree Lee’ lampoons conspiracy paranoia. Beyond random absurdity, Adult DVD use these characters to satirise ego, alienation, and modern existence.

As the record progresses, its electronic influences grow stronger. ‘Ghillie Suit’ leans into breakbeat and techno, paving the way for ‘Rolling Face’, an acid-house-inspired closer that ends the album with an extended rave finale. While the relentless synth-punk arrangements and Hanson’s deadpan vocals can feel repetitive, the band’s unpretentious, fun-first approach remains their greatest asset. Adult DVD’s self-titled debut captures the chaotic thrill of a night out and the absurdity of daily life.
