A Minimoog synthesiser is set to take the spotlight in a groundbreaking orchestral performance as the Asheville Symphony prepares to present the US premiere of Gabriel Prokofiev’s Concerto for Minimoog Synthesizer and Orchestra on 14 November 2026.
Held at First Baptist Church of Asheville at 2 pm and 8 pm, the performances feature pianist Inna Faliks and conductor Darko Butorac. As the first concerto for a monophonic synthesiser in a soloist role, the co-commissioned piece blends acid house, techno, distorted basslines, drum machines, and theremin-like sounds with orchestral interaction and DJ-inspired rhythms.
Gabriel Prokofiev designed the work to display classical virtuosity on a synth, highlighting Faliks’s technique. Part of the Asheville Symphony’s Masterworks 3: Double Take, alongside Kabalevsky’s Overture from Colas Breugnon and excerpts from Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet, the concert connects Gabriel’s work to his grandfather’s legacy while celebrating Asheville’s Bob Moog heritage. Co-presented with the Bob Moog Foundation and the Moogseum, it includes interactive Minimoog and theremin displays.
