Quadeca’s Life 1 is an album about growing older without ever quite figuring out how to do it. Released on October 1 through his own imprint, X8 Music. The 14-track, 48-minute record follows 2025’s Vanisher, Horizon Scraper, with a noticeably more immediate and playful approach. Where that previous album leaned heavily into sprawling orchestration and cinematic world-building, Life 1 feels closer to the ground: funny, anxious, melodic and often deeply vulnerable.
Quadeca, the alias of Benjamin Barajas, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer who transitioned from a YouTube personality to an experimental alternative hip-hop artist. Blending hip-hop with electronic, pop, R&B, and ambient influences, he emphasises unconventional production and personal songwriting. Recent projects, including I Didn’t Mean to Haunt You, SCRAPYARD, and Vanisher, Horizon Scraper, highlight his shift beyond traditional rap structures toward more cinematic, story-driven albums.
Beneath its playful quirks and sudden tonal shifts lies a cohesive exploration of time, relationships, loneliness, and mortality. Accessible tracks like ‘Life 1 (where did the time go),’ ‘Dark magic,’ ‘The hero never dies,’ and ‘It goes like this‘ showcase catchy melodies elevated by inventive sound design.
The album grows more introspective over time. Warm tracks like ‘Like you always do’ and ‘Baby steps’ shift into the energetic ‘Hell of a time‘ before exploring heavier themes. ‘Illusion of choice’ touches on depression and the burden of supporting others, while ‘Good grief’ addresses loss and suicide. These moments contextualise the earlier humour, blending absurdity with grief. The dreamlike closer, ‘In another life…’, imagines reincarnation as reconciliation, quietly fading out to reflect time slipping away.
While less grand than Vanisher, Horizon Scraper, Life 1 succeeds by making Quadeca’s creative ideas feel effortless. Despite occasional scattered experimentation and quiet moments, it remains an imaginative, accessible, and emotionally grounded pop record that balances humour, nostalgia, and heavy themes.
