Black Turtle Records Speaks on Identity, Authenticity, and Building a Legacy Beyond Trends

In an era where algorithms move faster than ever and trends can disappear overnight, Black Turtle Records has chosen a different path.

Founded in Madrid, Spain, in 2012, the independent electronic music label has built its identity around a philosophy of patience, authenticity, and longevity. Led by JmNogueras, Black Turtle Records has become a home for producers exploring the darker corners of electronic music, releasing everything from hypnotic techno and peak-time grooves to minimal and progressive house.

Rather than chasing fleeting moments of popularity, the label focuses on carefully curated releases that reflect its uncompromising artistic vision. Inspired by the resilience and endurance symbolized by its namesake, Black Turtle Records continues to champion music designed for dark warehouses, powerful sound systems, and listeners who value substance over trends.

We caught up with JmNogueras to discuss the story behind Black Turtle Records, its distinctive philosophy, the importance of artist identity, and how the label continues to navigate an ever-evolving electronic music landscape.

Please introduce your label and share the story behind how it started.

Black Turtle Records is an independent electronic music platform dedicated to the darker, more intense side of club culture.

The label was born out of a deep need for creative autonomy. After years immersed in the underground scene, I wanted to create an uncompromising ecosystem where artists could release innovative and powerful music without being forced to follow rigid commercial formulas.

We started as a passionate project to give a voice to groundbreaking producers, and it has organically evolved into a benchmark for impactful dancefloor music.

What inspired the name and identity of the label?

The name represents a philosophy.

In a fast-paced digital world where trends expire in weeks, the turtle symbolises longevity, resilience, patience, and a rock-solid foundation. We aren’t chasing viral, fleeting hypes; we are building a legacy.

Visually, we complement this philosophy by blending dark, cyberpunk, neo-noir, and biomechanical aesthetics with our signature turtle motif. It creates a premium, futuristic identity that tells listeners exactly what to expect: music that is structurally solid, immersive, and built to last.

How would you describe the label’s sound? Which genres and subgenres does it primarily focus on?

Our sound is hypnotic, heavy, and deeply rooted in the darkest late-night club environments.

Black Turtle Records focuses on peak-time energy and underground intensity. Our sonic core revolves around techno in its most powerful forms, including raw, deep, hypnotic, peak-time, driving, minimal, and hard techno. We also explore the darker side of trance, psytrance, and driving progressive house.

It is raw, driving music designed to command dark rooms and warehouses.

What do you look for when signing or working with artists?

Authenticity and a strong sonic identity.

I genuinely do not care about an artist’s social media following. What matters is the music and their work ethic.

We look for producers who understand tension, heavy textures, and raw power, artists capable of creating tracks that sound polished on massive systems while retaining that underground grit. Above all, we value consistency and a shared passion for darker electronic music.

Can you mention some of the artists currently on your roster?

Our global roster brings together a fantastic blend of established underground talents and emerging producers. Artists currently releasing through Black Turtle Records include Alberto Ormus (Ormus), Riolie, Joao Gomes, Guido Cea, Ferdinando Daneri, Mihasik, Capitan Anderson, Jan Nitzer, and Cristian Reible.

Each artist contributes a distinctive sound while remaining true to the powerful “Black Turtle” identity that listeners have come to expect on the dancefloor.

How has the music industry, particularly with the rise of AI, changed since the label first launched?

The landscape has shifted dramatically.

AI has democratised many creative tools, and as a label we embrace technology, particularly on the visual side, where it allows us to bring our cyberpunk and biomechanical artwork concepts to life.

Musically, however, the market has become flooded with generic content. That has made the role of a curated record label more important than ever. In an era of infinite noise, our responsibility is to act as a filter and protect the human element, the raw soul and club intuition that AI simply cannot replicate.

What challenges have you faced as an independent label, and how have you overcome them?

The biggest challenge today is visibility and cutting through the algorithmic noise.

Standing out among thousands of daily releases requires constant effort. We’ve overcome this by maintaining high curation standards and focusing on community building.

We also launched our own radio and streaming project, The Shell, creating a direct platform to showcase our artists and connect with listeners around the world.

Are there any upcoming releases, collaborations, or projects that fans should look out for?

Our biggest upcoming project is the release of Peak Drive 2026, Vol. 1, a summer compilation bringing together some of the strongest dark techno, hard techno, and driving progressive tracks we’ve curated throughout the year.

We’re also excited about our radio broadcasting collaborations with Coolzone Web Radio in Italy and Urban Revolution in Spain, where we’re showcasing every release from the label’s catalogue through specially curated DJ mixes under my artist alias, JmNogueras.

What’s the long-term vision and goal for the label moving forward?

Our vision is threefold.

First, we want to continue strengthening our international radio presence alongside our broadcast partners and establish our showcases as a destination for dark electronic music.

Second, we want to keep discovering and nurturing uncompromising artists from around the world by providing a platform where their creative identity is protected.

Ultimately, as our catalogue continues to grow, we want to bring the Black Turtle experience into the real world through curated label showcases and underground events.

We don’t just want people to hear the Black Turtle sound, we want them to experience it in its natural habitat: a dark, packed warehouse.

Be Turtle!!!!
