The electronic duo, Racines, recently unveiled their debut single ‘Market Miracolo’ from their album Arilos Mennar, which releases on June 5 via Locomotiv Records. Formed in 2022, Racines is a collaboration between Rokeya and Anissa, two artists from distinct backgrounds.
Rokeya is a London-based Indo-Italian-Welsh producer, performer, and curator who has created site-specific works for institutions like Ableton and L-Acoustics, while also releasing music on various labels, including Timpan Records and La Tempesta. Anissa, of Italian-Algerian descent, is a powerful singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for her collaborations with artists such as Moni Ovadia and Max Gazzè. Her work seamlessly incorporates music and theatre in her original scores. Together, they merge their seemingly distant worlds, crafting a dialogue that bridges traditional heritage and contemporary electronic sounds, resulting in the unique sound of Racines: ancestral, powerful, earthy, and inspired by the lands facing South.
‘Market Miracolo’ symbolizes an inner journey where love and light intertwine, using the market as a vibrant metaphor for cultural diversity and human experience. The lyrics feature a mix of Arabic, Italian, Spanish, French, and Ladino, emphasizing stories of resilience and desire through sound. The track showcases a richly crafted sonic landscape with contributions from percussionist Taha Ennouri, wind instrument player Carmelo Colajanni, and oud player Simone Santarelli. The production also highlights a feminine perspective, reflected in the visual artistry of Marie Cécile and the visual production by Andreola Mejia.
