glaive & kurtains announce collab album, release music video for ‘The Troubles’

In the midst of the pandemic, a then-16-year-old glaive was being hailed as the “future of hyperpop.” Now, at 21, he is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated third album in collaboration with longtime friend, kurtains.  On 27 April, the hyperpop partners-in-crime announced their forthcoming album, God Save The Three, which is set to be released on 8 May.

When they were still in school, glaive and kurtains spearheaded a movement in internet-driven music that challenged the boundaries of electronic pop and became the cultural phenomenon known as hyperpop. glaive’s latest album, Y’ALL, which was produced by kurtains, tells the story of a teenager who is uprooted from his home and returns to his hometown in North Carolina at the age of twenty as a dramatically changed individual in an unchanged environment. This growth is reflected in the album’s scale and complexity of sound, all while igniting the dancefloor.

With a video filmed in Kilkee, Ireland, the club-primed dance hit was first performed to glaive’s largest crowd to date, namely at his London headline show O2 Forum Kentish Town.

The duo shares: “‘The Troubles’ came together during a recording trip we made to The Cotswolds in sunny England. It’s a song that reflects the juxtaposition in our lives, representing the tension between our modest yet lavish tendencies. We needed a dance track, so we made a dance track. kurtains began with the garage-inspired drums layered with soft synth chords, and glaive wrote the iconic hook line referenced in the title and his verse. After a slight struggle for ideas for the second verse, Kurtains jokingly rapped over the bassline in a Welsh accent… We laughed, for it felt like magic. This song is inspired by a wide mix of different genres within the dance music realm.”
