DJ Gilles Peterson and The Playground fave KUTMAH are both self-professed fans of Belgian experimental collective STUFF. who release their eponymous debut album in the UK today via buteo buteo. The Belgium-based ensemble blend hiphop and jazz-inflected funk, and have been compared to Flying Lotus. Formed in 2012, the group have supported D’Angelo and jazz pianist Robert Glasper, and recorded live remixes for Jungle and Little Dragon as part of their residence at Brussels concert hall Ancienne Belgique.
The album comes with charcoal artwork from Belgian artist Rinus Van de Velde, much admired by UK designer Paul Smith. Gilles Peterson was an early supporter of the band, giving the album’s opening track ‘Event Horizon’ its first UK airplay on BBC 6Music. STUFF. was mastered by Daddy Kev (Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Jon Wayne) and features nine instrumental cuts.
