Overmono – Is U

British electronic duo Overmono are about to release their debut album, Good Lies. It seems like a strange thought, given how ingrained they are in the culture of contemporary British club music. By all accounts, they’ve become essential players in the scene, akin to Burial in status, their work in garage and bass and breaks both breaking boundaries and adhering to the longstanding traditions that have informed them. Last year, their minimal UKG banger So U Know went on to become the unlikely anthem of the summer, its sharp, galvanised breaks and pitched to heaven vocal refrain setting dancefloors across Europe on fire.

Is U, the latest single from their recently announced debut album which is slated to include So U Know, continues the groundwork laid out by the latter. An atmospheric and emotive garage track, Is U pretty much passes the Overmono litmus test with flying colours. The track builds and swells by way of its buzzing bassline and atmospheric backbeats, culminating in a bright, drone heavy crescendo. The track sample’s Tirzah’s Gladly, with the singer’s voice filtered in classic Overmono fashion and repurposed into a pitch perfect ear-worm refrain.

Overmono’s debut album Good Lies is out on May 12 via XL Recordings. Listen to Is U below.
